About the event
Police/Prison and Justice System Reform:
There will be discussions on the current state of Bail Bond reform. Also, discussions will be held on the history of policing in the U.S.—how and why it got started during the Jim Crow era. Finally, the inequitable mass incarceration of Black men in the U. S., along with possible solutions, will be explored.
Gun Control/Countering domestic Terrorism:
Mass shootings! School shootings! Workplace shootings! Black-on-Black shootings! Workshop participants will explore possible solutions to the refusal of Federal and State elected officials to take meaningful action on banning assault weapons. Also, panelists will discuss the mental and emotional effects on school children who witness school shootings, and the adverse emotional effects on students having to regularly participate in active shooter drills in school. Gun violence is not inevitable. In this strategy session, we will explore sensible solutions to gun violence that is unique to the United States of America.
Voting Rights Restoration:
Be a part of consequential dialogue to reverse the horrendously harmful effects of Shelby v. Holder. Can full voting rights be restored with a Presidential Executive Order? What can we, as individuals and members of the NAACP and other civil rights organizations, do to encourage Congress to pass the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act of 2021? Engage in discussions surrounding the linkage between Selma, where it began, to Shelby, where we are today. What will Shelby’s legacy be in 50 years? How do we change it?
